What to do with carpet offcuts to turn them into useful mats?

Work out what you need in the number of mats.

Before visiting Carpet Binders, it is helpful to work out how many mats you need and the measurements out of the carpet offcuts. This including making sure you have enough carpet to make all the mats you need.

You do not need to cut the carpet

There is no need for you to cut the carpet to the size you need. We have all the tools and experience working with carpet to cut to your measurements. Cutting straight-line edges to your size is part of our edging price.

Do you create round, half-moon or oval rugs?

Carpet Binders can create oval or round rugs for customers and generally to any size required. There are various edging options, including the timeless fringing tasselled edge that suits circular, or oval rugs.

How are the Corners of the Offcuts Finished?

There are two ways that the corners of mats can be finished off. These are known as Rounded Corners and Square Corners. Both have different strengths, it is explained in detail below.

Rounded Corners

For the majority of carpet mats, rounded corners are recommended. This is because they help prevent the corners from curling up, otherwise known as “dog-earing”.

When a corner curls up, it can become a trip hazard, and be easier to kick around accidentally. It also adds a neater and stronger finish. Whereas square corners have a weak spot, especially on a small mat with corners that are more lightly to be walked on.

Square Corners

For large area rugs and hall runner mats, we recommend square corners. There are several reasons. Firstly, there is usually a pattern on hallway runners. Thus, having round corners will likely cut part of the pattern off. Secondly, rounded corners on large rugs are physically heavy and need more care to edge.

What Colour Yarn or Binding Tape is Best to Use?

We strive to match the colour of yarn or binding tape as close as possible to the carpet, but we typically use a slightly darker shade as a general rule.

In some cases, contrasting colours or bright colours are used. Especially on the Axminster carpet, or where a rug needs a contrast statement. However, it is a combination of individual preference and style of carpet. Plus, what yarn or tape colours we have available onsite.

We recommend people to think about which colour they would like matched to the carpet piece. In the off chance that the preferred colour is not available, it’s a good idea to have a secondary colour in mind.
